Events and Volunteer Opportunities

The Alice MacKenzie Swaim ’32 Writers Series
will begin on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014 with a focus on Swaim from 7 to 7:45 p.m. in the Patterson Lounge, Laird Hall. The event will remember and celebrate the work of this published poet and Wilson alumna. Dr. Michael Cornelius, chair, department of English and Communications, Wilson College, will introduce the evening’s speakers. Joan Prescott, author of A Poet for the Ages, will discuss Swaim’s background and work in “Introducing Alice MacKenzie Swaim: A Poet for the Ages.” Jamie McCauley ’05, M.A. ’15, winner of the Joanne Harrison Hopkins prize for Imaginative Writing, will offer the first reading. Leigh Rupinksi, college archivist, C. Elizabeth Boyd '33 Archives, Wilson College will share information about “Alice from the Archives.” The second reading will be offered by Sharon Erby, adjunct assistant professor of English, Wilson College, author of Parallel (Harvard Square Editions). Dr. Cornelius will present “Alice MacKenzie Swaim: A Critical Perspective.” The third reading will be given by Patrick Fox ’16, winner of the William and Ivy Saylor prize for Poetry, and Prescott will offer closing thoughts. A reception will follow. The event is sponsored by the Department of English and Communications of Wilson College, Office of Alumnae/i Relations, and the Heritage Committee of the Alumnae/i Association of Wilson College. The event is free and open to the public.
