Four different Phoenix scored in double figures in Wilson’s 66-55 win over the Cedar Crest Falcons. Sophomore, Ashlee Yealy (Hanover, Pa./ Hanover) led Wilson with 22 points and 14 rebounds, recording her first double double of the season. Junior, Vanessa Whitfield (Chambersburg, Pa./ Chambersburg) also earned a double double, putting up 11 points and grabbing 12 boards. Wilson’s senior ball handler, Tara Fields (Berryville, Va./ Clark County) was the Phoenix second leading scorer with 17 points. In her rookie debut, Morgan Wonders (Newville, Pa./ Big Spring) posted 10 points and 4 rebounds.
In Sunday’s Championship game against Bryn Mawr College, the Phoenix started the game with an early lead, converting the first two buckets of the game. The Owl’s battled back, tying the game at 6 all just six minutes into the game . The rest of the half would prove to be a battle as the two teams tied the game and traded leads five times throughout the first half of play. However, it was Bryn Mawr who held a three point advantage going into the half-time break.
The Owls added to their led to start the second half, however, the Phoenix’s defense stepped up to hold the Owls scoreless for over a 5:30 minute span, allowing Wilson to gain a lead that they would not relinquish. Bryn Mawr did get within 2 points in the final minutes of the game, however the Phoenix made several key baskets down the stretch, included Yealy’s second chance lay-up with 27 seconds remaining in the game to give Wilson a four point cushion. Whitfield added insurance to Wilson’s lead, converting a foul shot with 13 seconds remaining.
Fields and Whitfield led the Phoenix each recording 20 points in the championship game and were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts during the tournament.
Wilson will next travel to Phoenixville, Pa. to face Valley Forge Christian College on Tuesday, November 28th for a 8 pm tip off.
