    Brett Cline has been coaching softball at Wilson College since 2000. He is a graduate of Temple University with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education, and received a Master's equivalency Degree from Penn State University. He is currently employed at the South Mountain STU School where he teaches business and computer technology.

    Coach Cline has a wide variety of coaching experience. He has conducted softball clinics for the Chambersburg Community, organized and directed the Chambersburg Challenge Pony Tournament, and developed and organized the Tri-State Fall Softball League. He managed and was the vice-president of the Chambersburg Suburban Softball Tournament, manager and board member of the Hamilton Heights Youth League, and is a member of the ASA, NSA and Pony Softball Associations. While managing the South Central PA Breeze and the Chambersburg Suburban teams, he has a combined record of 71 - 53. Coach Cline’s goal is to elevate Wilson’s softball program and return it to the level of excellence and the tradition of winning that Wilson College experienced in the late 90’s. He also believes fundamentals, unity, and fun are very important to the program.

    Rick began his coaching career in Smithsburg, Md., where he was head coach of his son's baseball teams for several years. His daughter played baseball on this team 1 year, then wanted a "sport of her own", so Rick began a passion for girls softball coaching her teams for the next 10 years. He has moved to Chambersburg recently from the Charlottesville, Va., area where for the past 10 years, he helped form and develop the Fluvanna Girls Softball League now consisting of over 100 girls ages 5-18. He served as head coach of every age group and on the Board as V.P. and Player Agent. He also instructed annual skills clinics for the league applying knowledge developed through evaluating many University of Va. girls games and their clinics. He also attended numerous clinics in Richmond, Va., where top college coaches shared their secrets to success. Rick believes in taking a genuine interest in the players, being positive and encourag ing, while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work at the fundamentals.

    Wilson College Softball Coaching Philosophy

    The success of our team is based on INTENSITY, COMPOSURE, ENTHUSIASM! Our Coaching Philosophy is the fact that playing softball is intended to be FUN! The coaches will be striving to make practices and games enjoyable experiences that will both develop skills and provide positive life memories for every player.

    “Playing time is earned, not given” is the foundation of the coaching philosophy. Most teams have starters and role players. However, starters should not receive any special treatment. Everyone on this team is expected to put the best interest of the team first, before any thought is given to individual accomplishments. No individual, coach or player, is more important than the team.

    What specifically does “Playing time is earned, not given” mean? The amount of playing time each player receives will depend on her skill level, attendance, attitude, commitment to the team, injuries and game situations.

    Team pride is another cornerstone of a competitive athletic program. Winning builds pride, but so does hard work and commitment to individual and team goals. We should instill in each player the belief that hard work pays off, and the harder a player works, the more she will achieve. While winning is a goal for everyone, at the same time each player should focus on her effort - not the outcome. A team can always control effort but seldom the outcome of a game.

    Players should set goals for themselves and the team. These goals should be challenging enough to require each player to extend beyond their present skill level. Each player should have the opportunity to achieve success and/or failure in game situations. When they succeed, give them positive feedback in terms of recognition and approval. When they do not succeed, give them feedback in terms of advice or instruction.

    Teaching and repetition are two of the tools used to prepare each player to be the best softball player she can be. Start with fundamentals, work on techniques and individual skills and teach team defense in depth. Take every opportunity to teach and demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for everyone, starting with the coaches. Believing that "Perfect practice makes perfect." players should properly practice the skills being taught, on a repetitive basis, so that these skills become as natural as walking and talking.

    Each player’s primary competition should be on her team, not on the opposing team. Strive for constant competition among pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. By practicing often with excellent players, each player will have the opportunity to become the best they can be. The underlying philosophy is this: players compete with other players or teams rather than against other players or teams.

    Mental preparation is as much a part of a coaching philosophy as physical preparation. Try to accomplish through mental preparation:

    • Intensity Exhibit an exceptional focus and concentration.
    • Composure Keep cool under pressure.
    • Enthusiasm Have fun, enjoy the game of Softball.

    Finally, our coaching philosophy should include the fact that playing competitive ball should be FUN. Strive to make practices and games enjoyable experiences that will both develop skills and provide positive life long memories for every player.
