WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTY DEBUTS AT WILSON COLLEGE IN FALL 2013
The Wilson College Athletic department will launch its first cross country season in the fall of 2013, making its debut as the sixth NCAA sport offered for female student-athletes. The addition of cross country aligns Wilson with the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). With Wilson’s addition of cross country, every NEAC school sponsors cross country for women.
In its inaugural season, the team will compete in several meets, opening the season at the 2013 SUNY Cobleskill invitational. The NEAC championship event is held annually at the end of October, two weeks prior to the NCAA Regional championship.
"With all of our sports, Wilson’s goal is to be successful and competitive both as athletes and as students,” said Lori Frey, director of intercollegiate athletics, “Our goal for the cross country team will be no different, and that is to compete for conference championships with student-athletes who are also successful in the classroom."
Wilson officials think they can attract outstanding talent for the team relatively quickly. "Given Wilson’s geographic location, we're in a great position to recruit from a wealth of talented programs. In fact, we're already recruiting prospective student-athletes, and as a Division III program, we may be a perfect fit for a lot of runners from our region,” says Frey.
The Wilson College athletic department is pleased to name Joanna Hayes as the first head coach of both the women's and men's cross country programs.
According to Frey, "Joanna brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to our department as we expand opportunities for Wilson's student-athletes. She is up to the challenge of starting two new programs, and we are confident she will build a strong foundation for both the women's and men's teams, positioning them for long term success in the NEAC and Division III."
