Chambersburg, PA – After a review of the athletic program and the financial support available from the college to fund those programs, we have decided to change women’s tennis from varsity status to club status beginning fall 2011. This decision was impacted by the anticipated roster size which is below the NCAA minimum requirement for a team, the condition of the existing courts, recent coaching staff changes, and intended minimal impact on outside entities. Decisions such as this are not easy nor are they made without substantial consideration.

With club status, tennis athletes will still be entitled to athletic training services, athletic awards, and some financial support from the athletic department for maintaining the club program. An athletic department staff member will serve as tennis club advisor and will assist the athletes in maintaining club status for tennis. This will include assembling interested students, arranging practice times, fundraising, and scheduling competition. As our department policy (Varsity and Club Sport Criteria) states “club sports will be periodically evaluated for placement on the transition track to varsity status.” Should the college’s budget conditions change, the status of tennis will be re-evaluated.
