From Jan. 26 to 31, Wilson College welcomed the four final presidential candidates. Members from the Wilson community interacted closely with the candidates through a variety of events.

Each candidate stayed at Wilson for two to three days and each met the community. This was the first time that the majority of the community had a chance to talk to the candidates.

The Role of Archer~Martin AssociatesAccording to an announcement from the Presidential Search Committee, the committee selected 12 candidates in early December last year. Then, Archer~Martin Associates, an executive search firm that teamed with Wilson at the beginning of the presidential search, began the process of obtaining reference checks and selected the four candidates who came to Wilson in January, 2011.

During their stay, each candidate had two sessions with the faculty, two sessions with students over meals, one session with the staff, one meeting with the trustees over a meal, one meeting with the cabinet over a meal, one meeting with the Academic Advisory Council and one reception that was open to everyone. "It was a very busy four days," Gibb remarked, "all of the candidates came away with very positive impression of Wilson."

Students Meet Presidential Candidates

Many Wilson students used the breakfast and luncheon opportunities to meet with the candidates. They asked the candidates questions and introduced Wilson traditions to them. The candidates enjoyed talking with students and also asked students questions such as what they wanted to see in the new president.

Laura Beck '12 said that she met with all four candidates. "I thought it was a great opportunity to get involved in the future of Wilson," said Beck. "They were all great candidates and they all had their own opinions about what was important for the school and the students."

Leslie Hoover '13 went to both breakfast and lunch sessions of all four candidates in order to know them on a deeper level. "As students we define and make Wilson College what Wilson College is. I feel that the Search Committee and the Board of Trustees realized that if the college is going to have a new president then it is important for those candidates to meet what makes Wilson so special," said Hoover.

Both Beck and Hoover thought that the four candidates all had high qualifications and would be able to do the job. Hoover said she understood that, "some boundaries must be set, but it is also important to have a president who is constantly in contact with the student-body, faculty and staff explaining why and how decisions are being made." Beck hoped that Wilson's next president would "be able to balance their time away from campus, such as traveling and campaigning, and their time on campus listening to the students and supporting athletic teams, clubs and activities."

Gibb said that students' active engagement in various events was terrific and the Search Committee appreciated students' questions. He personally learned a lot from the exchanges as well. "The candidates' visits to campus were a great success. I base that not only on my observations but also on the feedback that we got from the various campus constituencies."

The Selection Process

The Presidential Search Committee received over 300 written evaluations during the process and is reviewing the materials now. All the evaluations are confidential in the same manner as the confidentiality of the candidates. According to Gibb, the committee expects to have a selection for Wilson's next president "no later than March."
