This year's five gymnastics team consists of only five gymnasts, but say they are ready to persevere throughout the coming season. The Phoenix gymnastics are: Whitney Hawkins ‘12, Jenny Miller ‘15, Caileigh Oliver ‘14, and captains Mandy Grahn ‘13 and Alexandre Howard ‘13.

The gymnastics team looks forward to a fun filled season of new talents and attitudes. There are only five gymnasts, but they are ready to persevere throughout the coming season.

This year’s team is made up of Whitney Hawkins ‘12, Jenny Miller ‘15, Caileigh Oliver ‘14, and captains Mandy Grahn ‘13 and Alexandre Howard ‘13.

Smaller team presents challenges to Wilson Phoenix

The small team size is a challenge. In gymnastics, the team’s total score is calculated by adding the top five scores from each event. In an unforgiving sport where tenths of a point are taken off for small mistakes like wobbling on the beam or slightly bent legs, the demand to get as high a score as possible is crucial.

One way for gymnasts to accomplish this is to attempt skills with a higher value – but with the higher value comes greater difficulty. With only five gymnasts on the team, there is little room for error. Determination and support for one another helps the team withstand the pressure.

Smaller team equals tight-knit team

"We have a small team and all have very different personalities and talent levels, but we have each other’s backs no matter the score," says Hawkins.

In the gym, the team is working to better their routines. Despite practice times when only three or four people are practicing, they are determined to show the community their strength and commitment to both their sport and the school.

On Thurs, Dec. 8 at 7:00pm, the team will hold a show at the Old Gym by Lenfest Commons.

During this free event, the team will perform their routines for the public. This is a chance for the team to show off their skills and routines and to practice performing in front of an audience.

The team looks forward to the upcoming season, which officially starts on Jan. 15, 2012 at Ursinus College.

"Within the last few months we have grown together as a team and as a family. There are few of us; it really shows our passion in gymnastics and perseverance to the team. I’m excited to see the things we’ll accomplish together," says Howard.

This season, the team will perform for the pure love of the sport and the atmosphere of competition in which they thrive.

"We hope the Wilson community comes to support us at meets," says Miller.

There are two opportunities for the Wilson public to cheer the team on at a home meet, on Jan. 28, 2012 and Feb. 5, 2012.
