Wilson College invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of vice president for student development (VPSD). Founded in 1869 as a rigorous liberal arts college for women, Wilson began to offer a continuing studies program in 1982 to men and women seeking post-secondary education. The College recently engaged in a community-wide process to define the direction Wilson would take to thrive in the future. In January of 2013, the Board of Trustees passed a historic plan that includes the addition of new programs, a commitment to value and affordability, infrastructure improvements, and the admission of men to all academic programs. This is an opportune time for the new VPSD to join a charismatic and energetic new president in her third year at Wilson.
The VPSD reports directly to the president and is responsible for providing leadership to the student affairs division and its programs to enhance and support all aspects of student life. Reporting directly to the VP are: assistant dean of students, the Helen Carnell Eden Chaplain, the college nurse, the department’ office manager, and the directors of the Women with Children Program, career development, international student and scholar services, residence life, counseling, Wilson College Child Care Center, dining services, and campus safety.
This is an exciting opportunity in Wilson’s history, and the VPSD will play an important role in helping to define the institutional and campus cultures as the college works to double its current enrollment over time. Candidates should have experience creating and managing a vibrant campus culture and making purposeful connections between the academic program and the residential experience.
The vice president will demonstrate leadership in student affairs to support the educational and co-curricular needs of the students; bring increased excitement to student life, both on campus and through the development of activities with neighboring campuses; serve as a full partner in retention efforts; and work collaboratively with academic affairs in support of the academic mission by providing programs that enhance student learning, fuel student success, and promote long-term institutional loyalty. S/he will possess the capacity to interface with the other divisions of the institution. Strong management and leadership skills, as well as exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, are essential.
The successful candidate must have qualities of character and values that resonate with Wilson’s culture of collaboration. The abilities to think and work innovatively and to be actively involved in leading the division are expected. S/he will have management experience and proven capacity to build, nurture, inspire, train, and develop the division’s team and will be able to demonstrate, through his or her professional experience, knowledge of student development theory, conflict resolution, mediation, and due process. The VPSD will establish and maintain effective relationships with all members of the community and will work effectively with culturally and socially diverse populations. A bachelor’s degree is essential, an advanced degree preferred.
Consideration of nominees and candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The leadership profile is available for download on this page. Please forward materials electronically, in confidence, to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
