The 2013 roster comprises a sufficient number of upperclassmen who will offer much needed senior leadership as the team gets ready to confront their challenging schedule. Offensively, junior Hillary Swartz and senior Megan Schneck return to the team and look to continue their scoring contributions. Both Swartz and Schneck placed in the top five in goals last season tallying seven and six respectively. Seniors Victoria Whitbred and Katie Omori and juniors Kaitlyn Kuykendall, Nicole Melanson, and Chanteal Cobb add to the experienced upperclassmen presence in the midfield positions and will contribute both offensively and defensively to the team. Returning sophomore goalkeeper Gina Weigold will offer support to her team as the primary goalie for Wilson. Last season Weigold posted over 1,000 minutes in goal and tallied 76 saves for the Phoenix.
The team looks to continue their notable offensive numbers against their opponents in the 2013 season. Last season, the Phoenix outscored their opponents tallying 47 goals to the 32 goals scored against them. Wilson was also able to compile 302 shots against their opponents who totaled 215 shots.
The Wilson College field hockey team will use preseason to blend their individual talents and learn more about each other’s competiveness on the field. Head coach Shelly Novak commented, “We are looking forward to the combination of new faces and returners and hope to match last year’s successes.”
The Phoenix field hockey team will travel to Hood College this Sunday, August 25th where they will compete in a scrimmage against the Blazers beginning at 12:00 pm. The team will open up their regular season competition with an away game against Shenandoah University on August 30th at 4:00 pm. The Phoenix will open up at home on September 4th at 4:30 pm versus Dickinson College.
