The Wilson College basketball team is off to a 0-2 start after traveling to Poughkeepsie, NY this weekend to participate in the Vassar College Tip-Off Tournament. The Phoenix were defeated by Wellesley College 64-35 on Saturday afternoon, and defeated in the consolation match by Cedar Crest College 72-60 on Sunday.
Wilson got off to a slow start on Saturday verse Wellesley, scoring just 10 points in the first half to Wellesley’s 39. The Phoenix came out stronger in the second half shooting 40.9% and matching the Blue’s 25 points scored, but was unable to overcome the deficit of the first half. Sophomore, Vanessa Whitfield (Chambersburg, PA/ Chambersburg) led Wilson with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals. Junior, Tara Fields (Berryville, VA/ Clarke County) also scored 11 points, with 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Freshman, Ashlee Yealy (Hanover, PA/ Hanover) contributed 8 points and 3 rebounds.
In the consolation match verse Cedar Crest College again Wilson started slow, and the Falcons held a 42-25 advantage over the Phoenix going into the half. Wilson turned in a better second half, shooting 44% and out scoring Cedar Crest 35-30, but could not make up the difference from the first half of play. Both Tara Fields and Vanessa Whitfield turned in excellent performances for the Phoenix. Fields led Wilson with 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 steals, while Whitfield scored 26 points, with 8 rebounds and 2 steals.
Fields was named to the Vassar All Tip-Off Team for her efforts during the tournament.
On Tuesday, November 22nd Wilson will host Chatham University in the Phoenix home opener. Tip-off is set for 5:00pm.
