The Wilson College basketball team went 1-1 in this weekend’s NEAC conference play. Wilson was defeated by the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday 56-72, and then rebounded Sunday to defeat Penn State Abington 72-59.
In Saturday’s game verses the College of St. Elizabeth, the Phoenix came out sluggish,trailing by 18 points at the half. In the second half of play, the Phoenix outscored the Screaming Eagles 34-26; however, it was not enough to overcome the first half deficit. Vanessa Whitfield (Chambersburg, PA/ Chambersburg) led the team with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman, Ashlee Yealy (Hanover, Pa/ Hanover) had a monster game, recording 17 points and 16 rebounds.
On Sunday, Wilson started the game playing with fire and led Penn State Abington by 19 points at the half. The Phoenix held on to defeat the Lady Lions 72-59 for their 1st NEAC win of the season. Again, Whitfield led the Phoenix scoring 33 points and adding 17 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season. For the weekend, Whitfield combined for 57 points and 28 rebounds. Junior, Tara Fields (Berryville, VA/ Clarke County) contributed 17 points and 4 rebounds to the Phoenix victory.
Wilson heads into the holiday break 1-6 on the season, and will return to play on January 8th at Cazenovia College.
