Wilson Softball Clinches #1 Seed and NEAC Playoff Berth

On Saturday, April 21st the Wilson College softball team swept conference rival Penn State Berks, 5-4 and 8-1. With those wins, the Phoenix clinched the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South division regular season championship and the #1 seed in the South going into the NEAC championships. Wilson is currently undefeated at 18-0 in the NEAC South and are 23-2 for the season overall.

Throughout the season, the Phoenix has had several players receive individual honors. Megan Schneck (Bethel, Pa./ Tulpehocken) and Tara Fields (Berryville, Va./ Clark County) have been named NEAC student-athlete of the week, while Wilson’s pitching staff Nicole Musser (Middletown, Va/ Sherando) and Leigh Roche (Hanover, Pa./ New Oxford) have both received NEAC pitcher of the week honors. Field and Musser were also named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Hitter and Pitcher of the week, for the week ending April 15th.

Wilson had also maintained several NCAA Division III statistic rankings throughout the season. Currently, the Phoenix have NCAA number 1 ranking in scoring with 11.76 runs per game and stolen bases per game, averaging 4.62 per game. They also hold the third highest batting average in the county with 0.384. Several of Wilson’s players are also ranked in the NCAA. Bri Smith (Berryville, Va./ Clarke County) holds a number one ranking in stolen bases, averaging 1.47 per game. Schneck is ranked number one in the NCAA in runs per game, averaging 1.71, and Fields is ranked 3rd in the same category with 1.48 runs per game.

With one week left in the regular season the Phoenix continues to move forward in their quest of a NEAC championship and an NCAA tournament berth. They round up the season with games verses Valley Forge Christian College on Tuesday and Penn State Harrisburg on Friday. The Phoenix will travel to New York for the NEAC championship tournament May 4th and 5th. The conference championship is a six team double elimination tournament, with the champion receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III softball tournament.
