Wilson College Film and Dinner Series Examines 'Soul of India' on March 24

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – India, one of the most colorful and fascinating nations on earth, is the subject of the final offering in the season’s Wilson College World Travel Film and Ethnic Dinner Series, to be held Thursday, March 24. The evening includes a buffet dinner of dishes representative of India at 6 p.m. in Laird Hall, followed by the film, “Soul of India,” and a lecture by documentary filmmaker Rick Ray at 7 p.m. in Thomson Hall’s Alumnae Chapel.

India defies every attempt at definition. The landscape is incredibly varied, with jungles, deserts, the world’s tallest mountains, tropical beaches and more. And the Indians themselves are as varied as their landscapes: more than a billion people, thousands of languages and almost every religion known to man. Somehow, all of it has mixed into one vast, raucous and unruly democracy.

Ray has created a unique, personal tapestry of the country where he spent six months touring the sites, from the low backwaters to heights of more than 18,000 feet. Stay-at-home travelers will be treated to glimpses of some of the most fascinating places in the world: the Taj Mahal, the palaces and forts of Rajasthan, the Himalayas and Ganges River.

Ray also explores the India that few visitors see – a land of many contradictions, from villages to inner cities, crushing poverty to wealthy enclaves, ancient cultures and traditions to modern, high-tech workplaces. India today is home to one-sixth of the world’s population.

Ray is an award-winning cinematographer, editor, writer and director specializing in documentary films, cinematography and the stock film footage business.

The dinner menu includes: mixed vegetable salad, Tandoori chicken, kesar pulao (saffron rice), bhindi bhaji (stewed okra) and carrot kheer (cold carrot pudding).

Reservations are required for the dinner and tickets must be purchased at least one week in advance. Tickets for the dinner are: $18.25 per meal for adults, senior citizens and students ages 10 to 18; and $11 for children under 10.

Tickets to the film and lecture are $6.75 for adults, $5.75 for seniors, $2.75 for children ages 10 to 18; children under 10 get in free. Seating is unreserved, but attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. If seats are available, additional single tickets for the film can be purchased at the door Thursday evening.
