The Phoenix upset 2nd ranked Penn State Harrisburg

The Wilson College basketball team defeated second ranked Penn State Harrisburg 77-75, in a Friday night North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) south division showdown.

In the first half of play, Wilson came out hard and was able to check Penn State Harrisburg’s speed, gaining momentum and confidence as the half went on. Going into half-time, the Lady Lions held a 35-41 advantage.

The atmosphere in the gym was electric as the Phoenix came out in the second half and started to chip away at the Lady Lion’s lead. Wilson was able to tie the game with 10:53 remaining. Both team battled down the stretch, trading baskets and keeping the game with in four points. Wilson was able to take the led, 69-68, for the final time, with 3:08 remaining when Ashlee Yealy (Hanover, Pa./ Hanover) converted an offensive rebound. The Phoenix would not relinquish the led again, gutting out the 77-75 victory

Junior, Vanessa Whitfield (Chambersburg, Pa./ Chambersburg) lead the Phoenix with 31 points and 13 rebounds, recording her eleventh double double of the season. Senior ball handler, Tara Fields (Berryville, Va./ Clark County) followed with 25 points of her own, 4 rebounds, and 6 steals.

Head coach Angie Grove was ecstatic following the game. “I’m so proud of this team and the passion and work ethic they showed tonight on the court. They worked together as a team and never gave up on themselves. We executed our game plan and were able to gut out a huge win.”
