Wilson College Field Hockey Team Hosts Clinic for Special Olympic Athletes

Posted: April 17, 2013

On Tuesday, April 9, the Wilson College field hockey team hosted a clinic for Special Olympic athletes as part of Wilson College’s celebration of NCAA Division III week. This nationwide celebration of NCAA Division III week was designed to celebrate the unique Division III student-athlete experience, which offers a highly competitive athletic environment, a commitment to academic excellence and time to pursue other interests and passions.

In 2011, the NCAA Division III and Special Olympics formed a partnership designed to improve the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes. This continued partnership also provides a mutual learning experience between student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes. The Phoenix have teamed up with the local Franklin County Special Olympics organization in order to participate in this initiative.

During the clinic, head coach, Shelly Novak and several current field hockey players taught the fundamentals of field hockey to a group of Special Olympic athletes. According to Novak, “Our goal was to introduce something new to the Special Olympic athletes in a fun and positive environment. I think we accomplished that goal and it created a great experience for both groups of athletes.”
