The team looks to improve upon their 3-15 record last season and make a jump upward in the NEAC standings. “Graduating seven seniors from the 2012 team, left some gaps to fill on the field," said head coach Beth Weixel. "We have a core group of returning upperclassmen and some promising new talent on the team this season. We have the exciting opportunity to re-define the team and build for the future. The coaching staff and I are looking forward to seeing how this team will come together and what we can accomplish on the field.”
Senior Courtney Bernecker returns in midfield for the Phoenix. Bernecker led her team in goals last season tallying eight. She continued to help her team secure victories as two of her goals were game winning. The team will also look to key freshmen Nicole Bodulow and Nana Ama Ohene- Manu to assist up front in scoring.
On the defensive end, Wilson will rely on senior Breana Cardasso to make a significant impact as a key defender. Senior Janelle Wills will contribute on defense with Cardasso, but also will be spitting her time between the back and front. Newcomers Madeleine Chausse and Audrae Westurn are expected to help out in front of the net as well.
The team lost their main goalkeeper from last season who tallied 77 saves on the season, competing in all 17 contests for Wilson. Freshman Teniera Enjoli Prioleau will be tested early in net for the Phoenix, but will have help from key returners in the back.
The team looks to increase their offensive presence from last season. In the 2012 season, the Phoenix were both outscored and outshot by their opponents. The team is already on an upswing however, securing a 2-0 victory over the alumnae in preseason last week. The Phoenix hope to carry positive momentum into regular season competition, which begins on Friday, August 30th when the team will travel to Mary Baldwin for a 4:00pm contest.
