Wilson College World Travel Film and Dinner Series Begins 19th Year

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Armchair travelers can experience the cultures, cuisines and scenery of exotic and domestic locales through the popular Wilson College World Travel Film and Ethnic Dinner Series, which is beginning its 19th year.

The four-film series features dinners with menus from the various nations being spotlighted. Films feature color cinematography with spectacular footage documenting some of the world’s most enchanting cultures and awe-inspiring places – all brought to life through personal anecdotes of the lecturers.

Films/Lectures
All films and lectures start at 7 p.m. and are held in Alumnae Chapel, Thomson Hall. Seating is unreserved, but tickets should be purchased in advance. Save by ordering season tickets. A four-film ticket package is $23 for adults, $18 for senior citizens and $11 for students ages 10 to 18. Admission for children under 10 is free. If seats are available, additional single tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the film presentation. Individual tickets are $6.75 for adults, $5.75 for seniors and $2.75 for students ages 10 to 18.

Ethnic buffet dinners
All buffet dinners begin at 6 p.m. and are held in Laird Hall. Reservations are required and dinner tickets must be purchased at least one week in advance. A four-dinner ticket package is $67 for adults, seniors and students ages 10 to 18. Packages are $40 for children under 10. If purchased individually, tickets are: $18.25 per meal for adults, senior citizens and students ages 10 to 18, and $11.00 for children under 10.

Dinner/film packages

Wilson continues to offer two package deals that allow people to save money by paying for the films/lectures and dinners together. Tickets are available for the entire four-film/dinner series or for three of the four. Combination tickets for the entire four-film series are $86 for adults and $83 for seniors. The three-dinner/film package is $64.50 for adults and $62.25 for seniors. Packages are not available for students. “Cuba: A Road Trip from Havana to Santiago de Cuba” - Presented by Marlin Darrah

Long off-limits to Americans, Cuba – especially Havana – is the most tragically beautiful place in the Caribbean. Filmmaker Marlin Darrah takes you on a walking tour of Havana’s Old City that reveals intriguing and historical locations, including the Plaza de Cathedral. A driving tour across this fascinating island in a beautiful and classic 1950s Buick takes you to the tobacco fields of Pinar del Rio, the beautiful beaches of Matanzas, the sugar plantations and colorful towns of Cienfuegos and Camaguey, and the architectural gem of Trinidad. The armchair tour continues to the Bay of Pigs and ends in the vibrant carnival city of Santiago de Cuba.

MENU: Ensalada de aguacate y pina (avocado and pineapple salad), frijoles negros (Cuban black beans), ropa vieja (Cuban flank steak), crushed potatoes, and torticas de moron (lime sugar cookies).



“Yellowstone: Trails and Tails” - Presented by Sandy Mortimer

This film captures intimate scenes of wildlife, such as coyotes, wolves, bears, moose, fox, mountain sheep and elk during all four, glorious seasons. None of Sandy Mortimer’s photography was done with controlled animals, as is frequently done in nature films. With Yellowstone’s endearing otters as guides, this films helps audiences discover how and why families of wild creatures are motivated entirely by their own instincts, and how many are dependent on otters in order to survive during the coldest months. Mortimer also takes viewers on a remarkable journey to the bottom of Yellowstone Lake.

MENU: Cauliflower salad, grilled rainbow trout, vegetable rice casserole, Wyoming sautéed cabbage and cowboy cookies.



“Burma and Cambodia” - Presented by Buddy Hatton

Burma remains one of the most mysterious and undiscovered destinations in the world. It possesses a breathtaking beauty and charm, offering all the traditional delights of Asia in one fascinating country. This up-to-date travelogue explores the current cry for democracy from its people, who have endured 20 years of dictators and military juntas. The story of modern Cambodia is dark and steeped in bloodshed and tragedy. The capital city, Phnom Penh, has a French look about it, with wide boulevards and avenues, colonial-era French architecture and roundabouts. But that era ended with the Killing Fields that brought four years of ethnic cleansing and doom for the Cambodian people. Today, residents are rebuilding their lives.

MENU: Bean sprout salad (Cambodia), Burmese chicken curry (Burma), coconut rice (Burma), sweet and sour vegetables (Cambodia) and coconut bananas (Cambodia).



“Soul of India” - Presented by Rick Ray

Discover one of the most colorful and fascinating countries on earth – India – where Rick Ray spent six months touring the nation, from its low backwaters to heights over 18,000 feet, through its myriad of cultures – even weathering earthquakes and riots in order to patch together a unique and personal tapestry of this nearly indescribable land. The film visits familiar sites like the Taj Mahal, the palaces and forts of Rajasthan,the Himalayas and the River Ganges, but also explores an India that few visitors see – a land of villages and inner cities, a country in which the hopes and dreams of one-sixth of the earth’s population reside.

MENU: Mixed vegetable salad, Tandoori chicken, kesar pulao (saffron rice), bhindi bhaji (stewed okra) and carrot kheer (cold carrot pudding).
