CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Wilson College will hold its fourth annual Blue Jacket Golf Classic golf tournament – which raises money to help students attend off-campus seminars, academic programs and competitions – on Friday, Aug. 6, at Waynesboro Country Club.
“These kind of educational opportunities beyond the classroom are an important part of a student’s educational experience,” said Dianna Heim, assistant director of the Wilson Fund. For example, proceeds from last year’s tournament enabled two Wilson juniors to attend an American Chemical Society seminar on the ecological impact of chemicals.
Golfers and sponsors are being sought for the tournament. The deadline to register is Aug. 2.
Sponsorships offer local businesses tax credits, as well as an opportunity to be recognized in local newspapers and the Wilson College website for supporting higher education, according to Heim.
The tournament, which will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, has three divisions: corporate, women and men. A winning team will be named from each division and one overall Blue Jacket Golf Classic championship team also will be recognized.
The entry fee is $100 per golfer, who will each receive a box lunch, a buffet dinner and door prizes, in addition to 18 holes of golf and the use of a golf cart, driving range and locker room facilities.
The tournament will use a modified Ryder Cup format. Two-person teams will play “best ball” on holes 1 through 6, “alternate ball” on holes 7 through 12 and “total ball” on holes 13 through 18.
Last year’s Blue Jacket champions were Jim Wertner of Wertner Signs and Duane Cunningham of Greencastle.
This year’s sponsors include: F&M Trust, the Solaris Group, R.S. Mowery and Sons, Menno Haven Retirement Community, Orrstown Bank, Parente Beard L.L.C., Park Avenue Pharmacy, Wolf’s Bus Lines, Sheetz and Stephen C. Oldt.
