Hillary Swartz scored unassisted first in the game to give the Phoenix an early advantage. Wilson continued to maintain their lead for a long duration in first half even though the Generals took 16 shots against the Phoenix compared to their two shots. Victoria Whitbred got off the second Wilson shot. Washington and Lee tied the game in 32:15 when Charlotte MacDonald scored unassisted. The Phoenix found themselves playing a member short at times during the half as they received two green cards.
The Generals dominated on their side again in the second half, racking up shots against Wilson. Sophomore goalkeeper Gina Weigold and the Phoenix continued to play defense against the Washington and Lee attack. Alexis Ankro scored her first goal of the game 57:07 in off an assist by senior Megan Schneck. The Generals answered back with a goal of the own by Victoria Van Natten, making the score tied again.
With less than three minutes left of play, Victoria Whitbred pushed a goal in the net off a penalty corner by Megan Schneck. The goal marked Whitbred’s second of the 2013 season. The Phoenix were able to hang on to their lead and earned the close victory 3-2.
The Phoenix took advantage of their scoring opportunities despite being outshout 27 to 4. Washington and Lee held the advantage in penalty corners with 12 compared to Wilson’s three. Sophomore Gina Weigold played a solid game in net and had 10 saves. Wilson’s upperclassmen presence shined in the victory as they utilized their experience to play under pressure late in the game.
With the win, Wilson improves to 5-7 on the year. Wilson continues their road series and travels to Cedar Crest College on October 10th for a 4:00pm game.
