The Wilson College Athletic department will receive a $1,999 Student-Athlete Affairs Grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the 2011-12 academic year. The grant awards up to $2,000 to NCAA member institutions and conference offices to fund student-athlete development and health and safety related programming for student-athletes and athletics personnel. This programming can be done through the use of speakers, campus partnerships, workshops or other parties that can effectively share a message with student-athletes.

The Athletic department has decided to utilize the grant to fund the use of myPlaybook for Wilson’s student-athletes. myPlaybook is an interactive web based learning program designed to prevent alcohol and other drug-related harm among college student-athletes. The program consists of six lessons emphasizing different topics, such as NCAA banned substances, alcohol and tobacco use, performance enhancing drugs/dietary supplements, and prescription/over-the-counter drug use. Through use of the program, athletes will learn the effects of these various substances on their athletic performance, training, recovery from injury, and overall health. myPlaybook also allows freedom for student-athletes to complete the program any time or place with Internet access and the ability to track the student-athlete’s progress throughout the program.

For Wilson, myPlaybook will serve as a tool to help the staff educate student-athletes in various areas. According to Athletic Trainer, Tracy Randall-Loose, “myPlaybook will be a fantastic resource to help us explain NCAA drug testing polices/procedures and banned substances to our athletes, as well as help us be proactive in preventing future substance use.”
