Wilson College Hosts Symposium on Food Issues for Professionals, Students

Wilson College will host a symposium entitled “Closing the Food Gap — Connecting Community and Local Food,” on Thursday, Nov. 10, for professionals and students interested in issues involving local food, nutrition education, and how to improve access to locally grown or raised food.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Wilson College will host a symposium entitled “Closing the Food Gap — Connecting Community and Local Food,” on Thursday, Nov. 10, for professionals and students interested in issues involving local food, nutrition education, and how to improve access to locally grown or raised food.

The symposium is geared toward people who work in institutional food service in such settings as hospitals and schools, as well as those involved with food banks, the food distribution system and the field of nutrition. Students interested in environmental ethics or sustainability, as well as other areas such as sociology and business, may also be interested in the symposium, which will address questions such as: Do people have access to nutritious, high-quality food, and if not, what can be done about it?

The symposium will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. in Laird Hall on the Wilson campus. Registration, which includes a $25 fee, required and must be completed by Nov. 3. To register, go to http://tastethegifts.blogspot.com/p/registration.html.

In addition to learning more about food security issues and programs addressing food access and availability, participants will have an opportunity to participate in action-planning sessions focused on the needs of the region. The sessions will identify gaps, opportunities and programs; and will develop ideas that may ultimately help organizations and businesses collaborate to better serve the residents of South-Central Pennsylvania.

That evening, Wilson College will host keynote speaker Mark Winne, author of the books Closing the Food Gap and Food Rebels, Guerrilla Gardeners and Smart Cookin’ Mamas. Winne, who will also participate in the symposium, will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. in Thomson Hall’s Alumnae Chapel. There will be a book-signing at 6:30 p.m.

Winne’s talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of the South Mountain Speakers Series sponsored by the South Mountain Partnership, a group of private citizens, businesses, nonprofit organizations and government officials working to protect, preserve and enhance the South Mountain landscape in Central Pennsylvania.

The symposium and lecture are being sponsored by Healthy Adams County, Wilson College and the Capital Resource Conservation and Development Council, with the support of the South Mountain Partnership.
