The Wilson College Field Hockey team ended their 2011 regular season with a 4-0 victory over the College of Notre Dame of MD Thursday afternoon. Wilson dominated the majority of the game, outshooting Notre Dame 34 to 3. Jami DeVanie (Boiling Springs, PA/ Cumberland Valley) lead the Phoenix with 2 goals and an assist. Chelsey Smenkowski (Manalapan, NJ/ Saint John Vianney) and Megan Schneck (Bethel, PA/ Tulpehocken) both recorded a goal, while Maggie Sipps (Philadelphia, PA/ Little Flower) and Hillary Swartz (Carlisle, PA/ Boiling Springs) each picked up an assist. According to Head Coach, Shelly Novak, “It's always good to end your regular season playing your best, and everyone played thier best today."
The Phoenix finishes the regular season with a .500 record of 7-7. Sophomore, Megan Schneck, lead the team this season with 6 goals and 2 assists. In her final season, senior, caption, Jami DeVanie recorded 4 goals and 4 assists. Maggie Sipps and Hillary Swartz both totaled 4 goals and 2 assists for the Phoenix.
In the cage, Brandy Holtzapple (Red Lion, PA/ Red Lion) recorded 100 saves with a .794 save percentage. Holtzapple allowed only 26 goals this season, and recorded 2 shutouts.
The team now waits to see if they qualify for the Mid Atlantic ECAC Field Hockey Tournament for the opportunity of post season play. Qualifying teams will be announced on Monday, November 7th by the tournament committee. If Wilson is selected, they would play in one of the Quarterfinal games of the tournament on Wednesday, November 9th.
