The Wilson College basketball team has high expectations and is looking to improve on last season’s 5-20 record. This year, the team returns three starters from the 2010-11 season and adds several new players to the roster.
Returning for the Phoenix is sophomore, forward, Vanessa Whitefield (Chambersburg, PA/ Chambersburg), who led the team last season with 14.9 points per game, 11.5 rebounds per game and recorded 12 double doubles for the season. Returning junior, Tara Fields (Berryville, VA/ Clarke County) will also be a threat on the court for Wilson, averaging 13.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.4 steals per game last season. Senior, Maggie Sipps (Philadelphia, PA/ Little Flower) returns for her final season and will look to continue to be a defensive spark for Wilson. Head Coach, Angie Grove, will look to these veteran players to provide leadership and cohesiveness for the Phoenix.
Freshman new comers, Ashlee Yealy (Hanover, PA/ Hanover) and Sam Walker (Shinglehouse, PA/ Oswayo Valley) will add depth and experience to the Wilson roster. Also new to the team this season is Hillary Swartz (Carlisle, PA/ Boiling Springs), Brandy Holtzapple (Red Lion, PA/ Red Lion), Laura Beck (Coopersburg, PA/ Homeschooled), and Heather Jones (Gerrardstown, WV/ Messelman), all of who will contribute some positive minutes on the court.
Coach Grove is optimistic about this season’s outlook. “With the combination of our new talent and returning players, I am excited to kick off our season. I think that this team has an opportunity to make their mark in the South Division of the NEAC if we stay together and believe in ourselves and each other.” Grove is in her third year at the helm.
The Phoenix will start their season this weekend in the Vassar College Tournament with Vassar College, Wellesley College, and Cedar Crest College. Wilson will take on Wellesley on Saturday, November 19th at 4:00 pm and either Cedar Crest or Vassar on Sunday.
