CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda L. Kelly will address the graduating class at Wilson College’s 142nd commencement ceremony, to be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

Kelly, who will receive an honorary degree from the college, is the first woman to lead Pennsylvania’s Office of Attorney General since it became an independent elected office in 1981, and is only the second woman to serve as the Commonwealth’s attorney general. She was nominated by Gov. Tom Corbett to succeed him in the post and was confirmed on May 23, 2011. Her term runs through January 2013.

The attorney general is Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement officer, directing criminal investigations involving public corruption, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, insurance fraud and other statewide concerns. The office is also responsible for enforcing consumer protection and other civil statutes. The Office of Attorney General has 15 regional offices across the state and employs approximately 700 prosecutors, attorneys, agents, investigators and support staff.

Prior to becoming attorney general, Kelly was a prosecutor for more than 30 years. She served as both an assistant district attorney in Allegheny County and more recently was senior litigation counsel as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Kelly graduated from the Duquesne University School of Law and has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh.
