CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Named for the working-class city of Pittsburgh, Renaissance City Winds brings the city’s down-to-earth vibe to classical music. The chamber music quintet will perform a diverse program ranging from Bach to ragtime at Wilson College on Saturday, Feb. 27. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Thomson Hall’s Alumnae Chapel.

Prior to the performance, members of the quintet will present a 90-minute clinic that is free and open to the public. Geared to musicians, the clinic will include a coaching session on chamber music and demonstration of how to play without a conductor. The clinic will be held at 3:30 p.m., also in Thomson Hall’s Alumnae Chapel.

To sign up for the clinic or for more information or tickets, call 717-262-2003 or email specialevents@wilson.edu. Order performance tickets online at www.wilson.edu by clicking on Events and Conferences, and then Performing Arts Series.

Renaissance City Winds, one of Pennsylvania’s foremost chamber ensembles, was founded in 1975 and has come to be known for its informal presentations that make classical music accessible to everyone. Hailed by the New York Times as “expert wind players,” the group tours throughout the East and Midwest, including two concerts at Carnegie Hall and performances at the Kennedy Center and the Pennsylvania governor’s residence.

The quintet, in residence at Carlow University since 1978, performs a wide variety of music drawn  from the 16th century to the present, but has received special recognition for its dedication to American music. Renaissance City Winds has captured national awards from Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others. Heard frequently on public radio, the group has recorded CDs on the Elan and Centaur labels.

The Wilson concert will feature everything from Bach and other classics to lively ragtime music and a unique contemporary rhythm piece.
