Alumnae Artist Showcase
September 10 - October 15, 2010
Reception, September 10, 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Wilson College will hold a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, to mark the opening of Alumnae Artist Showcase, an exhibit of recent paintings by Wilson College alumnae Brenda Ashton Aiken, Class of 1957, and Pamela Cochrane Tisdale, Class of 1968. The exhibit, presented by Wilson’s Department of Fine Arts and Dance, will continue through Oct. 15 in the Bogigian Gallery, which is located on the second floor of Lortz Hall.
Aiken was born in Hartford, Conn., but has lived in West Chester, Pa., for the last 35 years. Only recently moving into her current vein of work, botanical illustration, Aiken drew and painted since childhood in the United States and abroad, including extensively in Italy and China. She was rewarded for her talents in high school with two national scholarships, and completed a degree with honors at Wilson College.
Aiken is a member of the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators and the American Society of Botanical Artists. She has exhibited in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, and shown in the Philadelphia Flower show in since 2008.
Aiken says she paints because she must. “Drawing, sketching, painting and the need to do so are as much a part of my genetic makeup as the color of my eyes and hair,” she said.
Tisdale was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs. Like her mother, she went to Wilson College, majoring in psychology. After completing a master’s degree in education at the University of Florida, she taught children with behavior disorders in Denver, Colo. Later, she returned to Florida and completed a doctorate in special education. Next came a move to Charleston, S.C. She accepted a position at the College of Charleston, where she taught in the education department from 1977-2001.
She continues to pursue her interests in painting, community, service, continuing education, travel, family and friends. “Because the stars aligned, I now have a hobby that gives me pleasure and allows for creative expression – two critical components of this phase of my life,” Tisdale said.

Judith Behler Howells '68, Sanctuary
February 3 - March 12, 2010
Howells grew up in eastern PA where vast landscapes formed a lasting impression on her as well as her art. While attending Wilson College, she was introduced to plein air (open air/outdoor) painting, which would become her primary mode of expression. After graduation, she worked as an art educator in public schools and for the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ. She continued her studies in art at Montclair State University where she completed an MA in printmaking. Howells also took graduate courses in education at Smith College as well as grad courses in design and drawing at George Washington University.
Her paintings depict places near her home in Pacific Palisades, CA, New Mexico and images of Martha’s Vineyard, where she has spent time each year since 1979. Howells states, “…I have worked to capture a spirit of place, by focusing on mood and essence. I’m not trying to reproduce nature or focus on description and detail. Even though the paintings spring from reality, it’s the underlying abstraction and simplification that is most important to me.”
Working in plein air, with shifting light, forces a certain responsiveness to the landscape; a need to develop form quickly and directly, which can be seen in this body of work. Most of her paintings that were worked on location are rather small, with larger variations developed in the studio. Howells also enjoys working from the still life in the comforts of her studio, where she can better control light.
Howells has exhibited in Washington, New Jersey and throughout southern California. She is represented by Schomburg Gallery in Santa Monica, and is a member of Oil Painters of America and The Impressionist Society.

Senior Capstone Exhibition
Susan Shaffer, Where There Is Darkness, There Is Light
December 14, 2009 - January 29, 2010
Shaffer, like all capstone students, was charged with producing a cohesive body of work, which she was to exhibit off campus as well as on. This body of work was to address concept, content and context, history, creativity, aesthetics, craftsmanship, verbal articulation, self evaluation, the appropriate use of media, and audience awareness. Shaffer was to handle all aspects of producing an exhibit; everything from finding a venue to transportation and installation, to insurance, pricing, and hosting the reception. Shaffer’s exhibit opened at the Washington County Hospital, in Hagerstown, MD and was on view there from November 29 – December 11. The exhibit moved to our Bogigian Gallery on December 14 and will close here on January 29.
Shaffer is an artist who began her career as a tole painter and decorative artist. In 1993, she began to move away from decorative arts and focus on fine arts, and began studying and working in watercolor, acrylic, oil and pastel. Her primary medium is watercolor, and she “creates paintings that flow from her strong interest in nature and fascination with bold and vibrant colors. She is enthralled with the challenges of combining realistic subjects with unexpected hues, and is inspired daily by the view from her porch in the rolling Pennsylvania countryside.”
Shaffer has exhibited widely throughout the region and is a member of the Franklin County Art Alliance, Valley Art, Waynesboro Studio Club, Greencastle Arts Council, and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society.

R.K. Dickson, New Prints
October 29 - December 11, 2009
A photographer, printmaker, and Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Wilson College, Dickson came to the arts after a successful career in geological science. He worked in the private sector, as a geologist conducting uranium and mineral exploration throughout the western US and Alaska. Dickson found a passion for the camera and combined the two fields, going back to school part time in 1991, while managing an environmental test laboratory. He finished his MFA in 2002 from Wichita State University with a concentration in printmaking, and continues to make photographs as well as prints.
For his upcoming exhibit at Wilson, Dickson will show a new group of original prints, which require a commitment to a fickle process as well as a delicate touch in plate preparation. Dickson writes of this exhibit saying: “This group of prints is quite important to me. I am expanding my conceptual range by mixing references to historic images and my interest in non-objective image making. Also, I hadn’t printed this seriously in years so there was a series of technical questions I wanted to explore. Making these prints was the only way to find out what I had learned from six years of immersion teaching art history. Doing art away from graduate school, or other assignments, has been a real test of my understanding and commitment. Although the grouping of prints is rather broad, the results are positive and I am eager to capitalize on the momentum I’ve built in the past six months.”

Barry Nemett, Language of Landscape, Works From Italy
February 26-March 26, 2009
Mr. Nemett is an award winning artist who has exhibited widely throughout the US and Italy, with additional shows in France and Japan. Venues have included Nation Academy Museum (NYC), Baltimore Museum of Art, Delaware Museum of Art, New Jersey State Museum, Museum of Art, Rochefort-en-Terre (France), Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (Japan), ISA Gallery (Italy), and numerous college, university and commercial galleries across America.
The work exhibited at Wilson is part of a traveling exhbition, making stops at George Mason University, Hood College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Studio Arts Center Internationsl (SACI Gallery) Florence, Italy, International School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture (ISA Gallery), Umbria, Italy, Maryland Institute College of Art, Bates College Museum of Art, as well as other venues. Nemett will exhibit a variety of drawn and painted landscapes at Wilson. These images combine drawing & painting and are pieced together in multi-paneled works. He is concerned with surface and the situation of that surface as it lives through its shimmer. Blending intricate depths, rhythms, and patterns, Nemett produces lush images of observed and invented spaces, which were built from direct observation in nature. He allows his images to grow as he works them, permitting the landscapes to wax through an additive process. Nemett states “I draw and paint from life, but the places I portray do not exist, at least not all at once. I make them up as I go. “
Nemett is Chair of the Painting Department at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, and received his BFA at Pratt Institute and his MFA at Yale University. Awards include The Hugh Fraser Foundation, Ford Foundation Grant (Italy), MICA Trustee Grant for Excellence in Teaching, MD State Arts Council Individual Fellowship Grant and a Fulbright Hays Grant (Spain).

Gail Skudera, Close Up
January 26 - February 20, 2009
Skudera is an award winning artist who has exhibited widely throughout the Midwest and eastern US with shows inChicago, New York, Philadelphia, and many other cities. Venues have included Sybil Larney Gallery (Chicago), MoMing Gallery (Chicago), Roberson Museum, State Museum of Harrisburg, Lancaster Museum of Art, Munson Williams Proctor Museum of Art, University of Pennsylvania, Northern Illinois University Art Museum, Columbia College, Northern Illinois University, along with exhibits at Out of the Blue Gallery in Lewisburg; a gallery she helped establish.
For her upcoming show at Wilson, Skudera will exhibit a variety of mixed media works. She combines painting, drawing, and photographic transfers primarily through a weaving process. The mixed media works often focus on portraits, or the human figure in various environments. There is often more than one image, plus a pattern created by weaving, along with other mixed media processes. The end result is a complex multi-layered work of art that is as much about process as it is about the content of the image(s).
Skudera has a BFA and MFA from the School of Art at Northern Illinois University. She has worked as an artist for some 25 years, teaching along the way at such institutions as Bucknell University, State University of New York at Potsdam, Mater Dei College in Ogdensburg, NY, and Cazenovia College in NY.
