Wilson College offers through Adult Degree Programs a number of other Professional and Personal Enrichment Programs.


Fall 2010

Ballroom
The first half of the class will be spent on the American Smooth Foxtrot, the romantic dance that is associated with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The second half of the class changes tempo with the Cha-Cha. Lively and flirtatious, the most popular Latin American dance gives a unique sense of fun for dancers. Laird Hall

This class will teach you how to review and critique your bills and spending habits, and then establish a budget and use it. Designing with Your Style
Learn your designing style in four evenings of varied workshops. Window dressings and bathroom and kitchen remodeling will show you the ins and outs of design and what works for your personal style. Tempting Therapeutic Oils
Healing oils have been used for thousands of years to restore and maintain health and balance in the whole body. Learn how chemistry works with the properties of various essential oils and the positive effects they can have on you. Watercolor Painting
This course is designed for the beginner as well as intermediate artists. Yoga – Hatha: Be mellow in the evening

Yoga – Iyengar: Greet the day!
A class for any level focused on basic fundamentals of Iyengar yoga. A careful approach to the precision and alignment of the body in the postures is stressed. Time is given for deep stretching and flexibility movements, with a dose of high energy to keep the workout aerobic as well. Ends with relaxation for total rejuvenation! Perfect for beginners and an excellent way for those recovering from injuries and illnesses to begin a practice.  Sarah’s Coffeehouse

Getting Published: Tips and Strategies for Seeing Your Work in Print

Saturday, Oct. 2 • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
This workshop is designed to help writers of all levels reach the next step in publishing. The two instructors, who between them have sold more than 50 books to publishers of all manner and sizes, will provide attendees with tips on perfecting their work for publication, finding the right publisher or agent to represent the work, formatting manuscripts, writing query letters, and everything else a you need to know to go from being an aspiring writer to a published writer. Designed as a series of small sessions, the seminars will allow students to select those that best suit their goals and needs.

"Completing Your Manuscript: When Do You Know Your Text is Ready for Publication?"
We all want to be writers, but how do we know if our work is good enough? When do we send it out for publication? The art of publishing starts with good product, but when is it ready? Writers want to submit only their best work, but how does one know what that is? We’ll start the day by exploring our own manuscripts and learning how best to gauge when they are ready to submit.

"Finding an Agent, Finding a Publisher"

Do you need an agent? How do you find one? Can you approach a publisher directly? How do you know who to send your work to? Our two instructors will take you through the pros and cons of each path towards publication, and emphasize a few resources to help you along the way.

"Writing Proposals and Query Letters for Fiction" – Cornelius
"Writing Proposals and Query Letters for Non-Fiction" – Morgan

It all starts – and sometimes ends – with the query letter. Though it’s often just a page long, the query can make or break your publishing chances. Learn strategies for writing good letters and ways to avoid the pitfalls of bad letters, and learn about the more extended proposals (including a synopsis and sample chapters) publishers often ask for, as well.

"Important Resources for New Writers"

From reference guides and Internet sites to print resources, conferences, groups and beyond, a lot of good information is available to help you know where your time and money should best be spent. This session will explore those resources.

"The ‘Biz’ Today: Scams, Printers, Micropresses and Other New Aspects of the Publishing Industry"
The big six publishers just aren’t what they used to be. Like many industries, publishing is feeling the economic pinch. Yet, today, thanks to increases in technology, there are more "publishers" than ever. Here, your instructors will hash through some of these new technologies and aspects of publishing and talk about how they impact you.

"Publishing Stories, Poems, and Other Works of Short Fiction – Tips and Tricks" – Cornelius

So you have a short story or a poem – now what? How can you turn that work into a publication credit and cold, hard cash? Learn how to get your short story into a journal or magazine, examine markets for short fiction and poems, and learn a few tips to help you see their works in print!

"Publishing Articles, Freelance, and Other Works of Non-Fiction – Tips and Tricks" – Morgan
You have an idea for an article or you have an expertise in a field – now what? How can you turn that into a publication credit and cash? Learn how to get your work into journals or magazines. Examine markets for articles and learn how to find where to publish in your field, and learn a few tips to help you see your work in print!

2 to 3 p.m.
Session VII – Cornelius and Morgan
"Beginning Author Q + A"

Bring your questions, concerns and comments, and share them as a group. Take the time to pick the brains of our two instructors and ask any question that hasn’t been answered yet – and even some that have!
