Joshua

Joshua Legg, MFA

Interim Director of MFA and Professor of Interdisciplinary Practice

Joshua’s work spans a variety of performance, visual art, and curatorial practices that typically address issues of faith, social, and environmental concerns in contemporary America. He is a performer, choreographer, theatre director, painter, curator, and writer, and he often creates devised performance work.

From 2017 to 2024, he developed and directed Wilson College’s innovative low-residency program with concentrations in choreography, creative writing, devised performance, directing, directing and choreography for musical theatre, interdisciplinary arts, and visual arts. The Wilson MFA is rooted in human ecology, and Joshua teaches the anthropological perspective, training students to conduct fieldwork which they then develop into creative ethnographies as a method of practice-led research.

In July 2024, Joshua became the founding dean of Wilson’s School of Professional and Graduate Studies. He is a tenured full Professor of Interdisciplinary Practice, and continues to teach in the MFA program.

Joshua resumed directorship of the Wilson MFA in July 2026, on an interim basis. From several months in 2026, he also served as the Interim Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Research for the College.

The 112 dances he has choreographed and directed span site-specific works, concert and dancetheatre, multimedia films, musical theatre, opera, and performance art. He has taught students from 3 years old to 70, and has served as a master teacher and guest lecturer/speaker for ACDA conferences, ADF’s Paul Taylor Project, the Dance Teacher Summit, and various universities, preprofessional and private studios, community arts programs, and high schools—he also recently served as an adjudicator for Baltimore’s AKIMBO site-specific dance festival.

Joshua’s recent curatorial projects include a shared exhibition for printmakers Eric Avery and Adam DelMarcelle, and collaborations with other curators that featured the works of photographer Therese Frare, the Indonesian artist collective Taring Padi, and painter Philip Lindsey.

His book, Introduction to Modern Dance Techniques, grew out of his writing for Dance Teacher and Dance Spirit magazines. (The book is available in English, French, and Italian.)

Joshua is an associate member of the Stage Directors & Choreographers Society.
