Bio

Adam DelMarcelle, M.F.A., is an assistant professor of graphic design. His prints and socially engaged art actions are created in Pennsylvania, on the front lines of the escalating overdose epidemic. His work aims to educate and mobilize community response, urging viewers to ask more critical questions of the world—particularly regarding their own roles within the systems contributing to the crisis. After losing his brother to an overdose, DelMarcelle dedicated his life to improving his community through his work as an educator and artist.

In 2020, he co-launched “Mariah,” a site-specific, augmented reality application that tells stories of historical injustice against the backdrop of significant cultural institutions and the financial systems that have enabled their existence. He is also the collector, curator, and steward of the traveling art collection “A Call to Question.”

DelMarcelle’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at Yale University; Syracuse University; the Quillen College of Medicine Medical Library; and MASEREEL (formerly Frans Masereel Centrum) in Belgium, among others across the United States and Europe.

He holds a B.F.A. from the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and an M.F.A. from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. His work has received coverage in The Washington Post, Hyperallergic, The Huffington Post, and others. It has also been featured in numerous books on the history and practice of graphic design, including “Thinking Through Graphic Design History: Challenging the Canon” (Bloomsbury Press), “Attending [to] Futures: Matters of Politics in Design Education, Research & Practice” (adocs), “Designing Activism: 31 Designers Fighting for a Better World” (What Design Can Do), and more.

DelMarcelle lectures at colleges and universities in the United States and Europe. He has had the honor of speaking at institutions such as the Sorbonne in Paris, Syracuse University, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and many others, where he encourages students to consider the responsibility they carry toward humanity through their creative work.

Adam DelMarcelle lives in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, with his wife Missy, their son Joey, and their basset hound Edith.
