Common Hour - Friday, April 9, 2027 Friday, April 9, 2027 - 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm The Invisible Islanders: Asserting Local Identity at the Sanctuary of Apollo on DelosBonnie Rock-McCutcheonAssociate Professor of HistoryDelos, a small, unassuming island in the Cyclades, was famed across the ancient Greek world as the mythical birthplace of the god Apollo. By the sixth century BCE, it was home to a vibrant Panhellenic sanctuary that attracted visitors from across and even beyond the Greek world. It is this Panhellenic role that has drawn the attention of ancient writers and modern scholars alike, at the expense of the polis of Delos and the people who lived there. This talk looks at what we can recover about the Delians themselves, who they were and how they maintained a sense of local identity at a sanctuary whose prestige depended on its openness to Greeks from everywhere.Join virtually via Zoom Meeting: Use this Zoom link for all Common Hour events.https://wilson.zoom.us/j/95215627508Meeting ID: 952 1562 7508More information on Common Hour here.
