Bio

Janice L. Holland, Ph.D., grew up in central Pennsylvania and earned her bachelor’s degree in animal production at Pennsylvania State University, where she served as both a teaching and research assistant. These experiences led her to pursue graduate studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) where she completed both her master’s and doctorate degrees in animal science with an emphasis in equine science. While at Virginia Tech, Holland’s research focused on the effects of dietary energy sources on behavior, weaning stress, and pasture management. She also contributed to projects involving exercise physiology and reproduction.

At Wilson College, she is an associate professor and director of equine studies, primarily teaching equine management and health courses. Her current classes include Introduction to Equine Management, Equine Healthcare, Performance Horse Management, Equine Anatomy and Physiology, Equine Facility Management, and Equine Nutrition.

Outside the classroom, she is a frequent contributor to The Horse magazine and the Horses in the Morning podcast. She is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Association of Equine Affiliated Academics, the Equine Science Society, the American Association of Equine Therapists and Technicians, and the Pennsylvania Equine Council.

After nearly 20 years of living in Kentucky, Holland is happy to be back near her roots. She currently lives in Chambersburg with her husband and multiple cats and hopes to add a new horse to the mix in the near future. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, reading, photography, crafting, and watching a variety of sports with her family. She also likes to support the Wilson community by attending a variety of events on campus.
