Certificate in Case Method Teaching, February 1999 Professional Experience Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh 2005 – 2011 President and Director Responsible for the strategic leadership and operation of the City of Pittsburgh’s Library System. The system serves a regional population of 1.2 million and includes 18 neighborhood library locations, Main Allegheny County Library, Business Libraries, Foundation Center, Pittsburgh Photographic Library and Western and Central Pennsylvania’s Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Designed and commissioned the library’s first economic impact study, which revealed that the system is the region’s most visited asset, welcoming more than 2.2 million visitors annually and circulating approximately 3.2 million items annually, contributing over $168 million to the local economy. The study reaffirmed the library’s role as a catalyst in literacy and learning in the community. The results served as a catalyst for a state-wide and national study on the economic impact of libraries. Other responsibilities include managing an operating budget of $26 million and a staff complement of 500 employees. Created and launched the first ever capital campaign for the library, the successful $58 million dollar campaign, Libraries for LIFE, has renovated 10 neighborhood libraries. The campaign is a collaboration of public, foundation, corporate and community support. As one of eight original Carnegie Institutions participate in bi-annual selection and award of the Carnegie Medals of Philanthropy in conjunction with the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Dunfermline Scottish Trust. H.J. Heinz School of Public Policy and Management 2003 – 2005 Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa. Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship and Public Policy Project responsibilities included the Girls, Math & Science Initiative, a National Science Foundation funded public/private work force development collaboration between Fred Roger’s Family Communications, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, focused on expanding informal learning opportunities for girls and boys to explore entrepreneurship, math and science. Scope of work also includes a joint appointment to the School of Design for development of a community wide social marketing campaign. Responsible for GaliLead, a new Center for Community and Multicultural Leadership in the 1,400 square miles of Northern Israel known as the Galilee. The center is a unique effort designed in partnership with the United Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh and a group of professional and civic minded individuals from the region to strengthen cooperation between Arab and Jewish communities.
