Brittany Harman, Ph.D.

Brittany Harman, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of psychology at Wilson College, where she teaches a wide range of courses including Introduction to Psychology (PSY110), Learning Principles and Application (PSY207), Biopsychology (PSY218), Health Psychology (PSY331), Evolutionary Psychology (PSY335), Experimental Psychology (PSY341), and Cognitive Psychology (PSY380). She also serves as an instructor and research mentor for Senior Thesis I & II (PSY498/499), guiding students through advanced research projects.  

Harman’s research interests center on memory, particularly the application of memory theories to real-world challenges such as eyewitness suggestibility and effective study strategies. She is particularly interested in the social and linguistic transmission of misinformation. Her doctoral dissertation explored the comprehension, use, and memory of exaggerated content—a study she is currently preparing for publication.

Harman earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Master of Science in psychological science from Shippensburg University, followed by a Master of Arts in psychology and a doctorate in cognitive psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Alexandra Toms ’11, M.S., is an assistant professor of psychology at Wilson College, specializing in social psychology, which examines how interpersonal interactions shape thoughts and actions. Her favorite courses to teach include Social Psychology, Psychology of Gender, Psychology of Human Sexuality, and Understanding Statistics. In the classroom, she emphasizes interactive and engaging learning experiences, helping students apply psychological concepts and information to their daily lives.  

Toms’ academic research focuses on the experiences of underrepresented groups, including women in masculine settings and the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. She is also currently studying ways to increase the retention of first-generation college students.  

She earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Wilson College, a Master of Science in psychological science from Shippensburg University, and a Master of Divinity from Bethany Theological Seminary. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in higher education leadership at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
